As one of the leading contemporary artists in conceptual photography, Tomoko Sawada’s work explores cultural identification and gendered societal norms through self-created portraiture.

Diversions, Subtleties and Devotion: Five Photographic Visions: Co-organized by Venice Arts and Month of Photography Los Angeles (MOPLA), this exhibition curates the work of five photographers - Kristin Bedford, Rachel Bujalski, Allison Pharmakis, Josh S. Rose and Lev Rukhin — each bringing a unique perspective to MOPLA’s 2016 theme: Diverse/City.
Diversions, Subtleties and Devotion encompasses a variety of documentary visions into the people and places that make our contemporary cities—as well as more far-flung places connected to them only tangentially—vibrant, interconnected, and diverse places to live. Josh S. Rose and Lev Rukhin surreptitiously capture photographs of the often-overlooked communities and characters of Los Angeles’ neighborhoods. Kristin Bedford and Allison Pharmakis take deep dives into enduring communities of faith in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Traveling through high desert, national forests, city marinas, and coastal and mountain towns, Rachel Bujalski takes portraits of people living an alternative American Dream—off-the-grid residentially, but plugged in technologically. Together, these artists’ photographic series take us inside worlds both all around us, and utterly new.

Trouble Diaries. A personal diary entails an intimate conversation connected with the self, and the promise of avoiding disappearance and disintegration.
Trouble Diaries: Four Stances is a series of exhibitions exploring the unique positions and approaches of women artists from around the world. The series begins in Los Angeles, with work by artists from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Regardless of cultural difference, they share similar concerns and a critical view of the role of woman within society. The series sheds light on individual actions that build a collective experiences through a female perspective. The intimate life of a person can complicate the way they address broader political agenda. The construction of collective memory without losing sight of personal feelings and emotional bonds cannot be easily classified into theories which rationalize, and thus dominate, politically.
The artists use similar strategies of performance and the appropriation of traditional genres, to reveal how the female body becomes a political subject when exposed as a critical weapon. French-born Mathilde ter Heijne of Berlin, Germany confronts socio-political gender issues and intersectional feminism through performance. Her videos explore the issue of self-immolation as a moral and ideological act. Fan Liu of Wuhan, China appropriates traditional Chinese watercolor painting on silk to reveal a painful reality that surpasses the beauty of depicting nature. Her work combines classical imagery with the consciousness of the modern female identity to explore an intrinsic discourse about gender in society and culture. Iris Schieferstein of Lich, Germany uses the female body as a prop in her photographs of recreated scenes in history. Chilean-born Eugenia Vargas Pereira of Miami, USA uses photography to create a series of "storytales" with a beautiful heroine, who, dressed to kill and equipped with phallic protection, offers opposition to the world she inhabits, a world in which fear is the new norm.

The Fahey/Klein Gallery is pleased to present photographer Nick Brandt's newly released body of work and upcoming exhibition, Inherit The Dust. The exhibition consists of large scale panoramas and coincides with the release of Nick Brandt's upcoming publication of the same title.
For over ten years, Nick Brandt had been photographing in East Africa, concluding three years ago with the photographic trilogy On The Earth, A Shadow Falls, Across The Ravaged Land. The highly acclaimed series became an elegy of sorts, an embodiment of the photographer's ongoing efforts to capture the rapidly vanishing natural world and changing landscape of East Africa. In Inherit The Dust, Nick Brandt has re-envisioned his animal portraits, installing them as life-size panels in the environments that the animals once inhabited. The formerly undisturbed landscapes have been reduced to industrial and urban wastelands. The panoramas are stunning in size and scope, but also harrowing and incredibly sobering documents of an impending social and environmental crisis.

Legends of Motown: Celebrating the Supremes

The first of our Legends Of Motown exhibit series opened June 25, 2015. The exhibit gives visitors a one-of-a-kind look at the life and career of of one of the most successful American singing groups of the '60s, The Supremes. The exhibit begins at the start of The Supremes' career, when they were still known as The Primettes, to their signing with Motown and takes visitors on a timeline tour of the height of their success — from setting a record for the most consecutive No. 1 hits by an American group in June 1965, to creating a legacy that still exists today through their music and "Supreme" style.
Unlike previous Supremes exhibitions, our exhibit is not exclusively a gown collection. This exhibit is the start of a series of exhibits celebrating Motown's musical and cultural impact. Legends Of Motown: Celebrating The Supremes will be on display through spring 2016.

Abstract Photography has a long, illustrious, inspiring tradition, which extends to contemporary photographers’ work.
Abstract Never Is conveys the concept that an abstract photographic image never truly escapes the process of putting the lens in front of the eye and clicking the shutter. The moment of conception of an abstract photograph requires intention, place, surface, object, and time, to mention a few aspects. If it is successful, it thrives on the border of the known and the unknown. The moment and the timeless. A successful abstract photograph requires both - and balances on the heft of each.
This show places contemporary photographers who practice abstraction as an important way of seeing the world in the pantheon of well known abstract photographers such as Edmund Teske.

Featuring compelling images of festivals and political rallies, this exhibition highlights the extraordinary cultural diversity of the greater Los Angeles area. California-based photographer Bendat has documented community events in Southern California and throughout the world for several decades. Her photographs offer visitors an intimate view of three kinds of annual celebrations held in and around Los Angeles: a late-October fiesta for the Guatemalan folk saint San Simón, mid-January Orthodox Ethiopian Timket (Epiphany) festivities, and the mid-April Cambodian New Year or Chaul Chnam Thmey. These images illustrate the ways in which immigrants maintain homeland traditions in the United States and express their ethnic and cultural identity. Focusing more on activism, Bendat also has created a Legalize L.A. series emphasizing how diverse groups citywide have collectively demonstrated dignity and unity in their struggle for immigration reform.

Firsts, Seconds and Thirds: African American Leaders in Los Angeles During the 1960s and 70s from the Rolland Curtis Collection

Rolland Curtis’ images provide a unique view of the African American experience in South Los Angeles during the 1960s and 1970s and document the city’s black leaders of the period. Some famous, some forgotten, these individuals were true trailblazers: the first, second, or third African Americans in the history of Los Angeles to accomplish their feats. The men and women in these photographs helped change the face of Los Angeles and eventually the entire nation. Their efforts and unwavering crusade for civil rights were instrumental in the development of Los Angeles as one of the most diverse cities in the world, and a shining example of the rich culture that emerges when we value and fight for equality.

In her many photographic projects, Catherine Opie has explored the tension between private desire and the public face. With the O Portfolio, shown at LACMA in its entirety for the first time in a Los Angeles museum, she offers an anatomy of sexual practices that are often obscured from public view. The photographs depict sadomasochistic scenarios derived from her participation in San Francisco’s bondage community.

De Soto Gallery is pleased to present Part 1: Redo, an exhibition of photographs by Sadie Wechsler. The exhibition opens Saturday, February 27 and will be on view thru April 30, 2016. This is the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery. She will be in attendance for the opening night reception.
Wechsler’s fantastical images present an off-kilter world that tends toward extremes. Part 1: Redo follows disparate threads of possible futures, sliding in and out of the artificial and the manipulated. The images are produced using various approaches: straight photographs, digital collage, rephotographed photomontages, and layered, 3-D cut paper composites. They are disjointed save for in their immediacy and a certain hyperawareness of their place among a world of pictures post-Web 2.0. A feedback loop — us watching ourselves watch ourselves.
For Wechsler, the fluidity of fact and fancy in the retelling of our stories is where the real truth emerges. Photography, with its ability to fictionalize actuality, speaks natively to such a world in flux. Multiplicity is essential, iterations are endless and unreliable, and memory and experience are constantly renegotiated. In Part 1:Redo nothing is quite right but it’s not completely wrong either. If in the realm of images we are at liberty to rescript reality, then Wechsler leads us into the coming times with wonder, disillusion, and good dose of humor.
Sadie Wechsler (b. 1985, Seattle, Washington) received her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2013. Her work has been exhibited across the United States, including recent exhibitions at Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, Oregon and Aperture Gallery in New York. In 2015, she was shortlisted for the Betty Bowen Award administered by the Seattle Art Museum. Wechsler is based in Seattle, Washington.

Robert Mapplethorpe is among the most influential visual artists of the late twentieth century. This major retrospective exhibition reexamines the arc of his photographic work from its humble beginnings in the early 1970s to the culture wars of the 1990s. Drawn from the landmark acquisition made in 2011 from the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, the exhibition mixes Mapplethorpe's most iconic images with lesser-known photographs. Two complementary presentations, one at the J. Paul Getty Museum and another at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, are designed to highlight different aspects of the artist’s complex personality.

In 1973, with the assistance of his lover Robert Mapplethorpe, Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr. came to realize that photography was an under appreciated and undervalued art form. Over the next decade, Wagstaff assembled one of the most important private collections of photographs in the world. In 1984 he sold it to the J. Paul Getty Museum, where it became part of a group of major acquisitions that formed the Department of Photographs. This three-gallery exhibition presents a selection of Wagstaff’s collection, encompassing both masterpieces of the medium and obscure works that deserve attention.

Known for their large-scale, narrative-driven tableau photographs, Jeff Charbonneau & Eliza French have honed their visual language through ten years of ongoing collaboration. The Body Electric revisits early periods of intensive experimentation with light painting, in-camera illusions, costuming and performance, that became the foundation for the duo's artistic practice. Included in the exhibition are figure studies, landscapes, and abstract works printed as intimately scaled silver gelatin and pigment prints, as well as unique polaroids.

Paul Martineau, associate curator of photographs, the J. Paul Getty Museum, leads a gallery tour of the exhibition. Meet under the stairs in the Entrance Hall. Robert Mapplethorpe is among the most influential visual artists of the late twentieth century. This major retrospective exhibition reexamines the arc of his photographic work from its humble beginnings in the early 1970s to the culture wards of the 1990s. Featuring portraits, nudes, still lives, and the controversial X Portfolio, the exhibition explores Mapplethorpe's studio practice and the creation of his foundation, which has shepherded his legacy into the 21st century.
Drawn from the landmark acquisition from the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, two complementary presentations, one at the J. Paul Getty Museum and another at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, highlight different aspects of the artist's complex oeuvre.

A group exhibition of artists that crossed paths in the early 90s having a profound interaction featuring Jim McHugh, Robert Graham, Big Sleeps, Prime, Juan Carlos Munoz, Alex Kizu.
Opening April 7, 2016, An Official Exhibition of Month of Photography Los Angeles AFTERMATH combines the photography of Jim McHugh, who documents the creative lives of five LA street artists, with these five artist's own art works and the rarely seen, large format photography of one of America’s greatest sculptors, Robert Graham.
AFTERMATH is a commemoration of sculptor Robert Graham's 1993 outreach to endangered youth, using his now famous MOCA Torso Project; to teach those from the dangerous other side of LA to make art, to work in bronze. Under Graham's guidance they fabricated a small female torso sculpture, the proceeds of which went to the newly forming Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. "An exquisite work exhibiting the sculptor's best known subject, the female nude," Graham's small sculpture also became a symbol of possibility for many.
Juan Carlos Munoz aka “Heaven” was one of the original members who joined the TORSO project, and continued to work with Robert Graham as his studio assistant., and continues to work with his son Steven Graham at the studio workshop. “Heaven” is an artist, muralist, and a sculptor. This exhibition, AFTERMATH, brings together, works by “Heaven's” friends and fellow muralists, Gajin Fujita, Alex Kizu aka “Defer”, Joe Reza aka “Prime”, and Big Sleep, along with images by Jim McHugh, who photographed Robert Graham’s MOCA Torso project in 1992 for numerous magazine publications, and who has also photographed recent works of above artists.

Project Gallery is excited to announce the opening of LA Rebels, a collection of photographs from LA’s street and music scene by legendary music photographer Janette Beckman. The exhibition will also feature Beckman’s collaboration with graffiti artists Cey Adams, Revolt, Jules Muck, Jester, Zephyr, Morning Breath and more.
LA Rebels, includes almost 20 pieces of work spanning across Beckman’s prolific career. Known for her documentation of the rise of hip-hop, the show includes shots of LA hip-hop legends Dr. Dre, Eazy E, and Ice Cube. Select images from her photo essay on the East LA gang, El Hoyo Maravilla, will also be on display.
Recently Beckman teamed up with graffiti artists to create a series entitled The MashUp. Conceived and curated by artist and designer Cey Adams, the artists reinterpreted Beckman’s iconic portraits of icons of the 80’s hip hop scene such as Keith Haring, Beastie Boys, Salt n Pepa, Slick Rick and Dr Dre, in their own distinctive style, creating new works of art.
Beckman impressive career began by capturing the burgeoning London punk scene of the late 70s/early 80s and the likes of The Clash, The Specials, and Ramones. In 1982, she set her sights on New York and was drawn to underground hip-hop. It was there that she worked with pioneers of the genre such as Run DMC, Slick Rick, and Grandmaster Flash.
Her photographs have recently been exhibited at: The Museum of the City of New York, Punctum London, HVW8 and Le Salon Paris. Beckman lives and works in New York City and is the New York editor for the British style magazine Jocks & Nerds.
Neighboring galleries on Chung King Road will also be open on April 9th from 7-10 p.m.

THE EXHIBIT WILL FEATURE SOME NEVER BEFORE SEEN PHOTOS FROM THE BOOK
In chaotically stunning portraits, HER captures the essence of the inner struggles of every woman. The stunning black-and-white images truly allows rage, encourages body acceptance, explores creativity, and essentially breaks the façade of female perfection and provides insights into the pressures that women face every day. Many of the portraits are quite humorous, whimsical, and highlight the universal experience of being a woman.
HER strips away the pretense of flawlessness picture by picture, displaying dark whimsy using simple yet evocative props such as wigs, umbrellas, and straitjackets, revealing the raw intimacy of women struggling against their senses of self and societal expectations. One visually arresting photo features a woman face down at the dinner table with her husband; another photo is a feminist interpretation of The Last Supper; while another photo features a woman holding an umbrella, shielding herself from falling prescription pills.
Photographer Marjorie Salvaterra examines the psychology of age and gender through the lens of unexpected interpretation and exaggerated gestures, wildly evocative of the great Italian film directors like Federico Fellini and painters such as Alex Katz. At the same time, she offers up the individuality of womanhood, representing the woman who struggles with making sense of this crazy world. Salvaterra is a mother of two and was a stay-at-home mom before making her foray into the photography world, providing her with a unique perspective that resulted in these magnificent photographs.
Captured in 75 striking, perversely humorous, black-and-white images using subjects of all varieties, here is an incisive social commentary that examines women who have broken free of the façade of perfection.

Avenue 50 Studio is proud to present Car Free In A Car Culture "Through The Eyes Of A Bus Rider," a photography installation by Edward E. Solis.
"Through The Eyes Of A Bus Rider,” is comprised of black and white and color photographs that document Solis’ travels on the MTA. The selected works were curated from thousands taken throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties over the past decade. The exhibit is curated line-by-line to create geographical cohesion by displaying the photos precisely to the real life location of the gallery.
Southern California remains immersed in a predominantly car-based culture. In our cars we avoid our surroundings, choosing instead to turn up the radio, close the windows and escape. Solis explores the City's well-worn tracks as well as hidden sculptural gems, architectural angles, and the natural world around us. Through his photographs we experience places many of us have only visited vicariously, if at all.
"There are definitely more benefits than disadvantages to taking public transportation in Southern California. These positives are reflected in . . . overall qualities of life, which are elaborated by everything the city has to offer, including its history, geography, and diverse cultures and lore. We mitigate our daily stresses by walking more, seeing more, and connecting with our surroundings. The constant movement of trains and buses mobilizes a sense of freedom . . . freedom to relax, catch up on work, or simply observe Los Angeles in a way we cannot when distracted by the task of negotiating a vehicle.” -- Edward E. Solis is a 41-year-old Angeleno, born in East Los Angeles and raised in Whittier CA. He is a 21-year music industry veteran who views public transportation as a chauffeured form of transport; Solis equates car-free with carefree. For the past ten years, Solis has single-handedly raised awareness of and promoted the car-free lifestyle across many communities and cultural environments. He sees himself as a global advocate for a car-free and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Opening April 14, 2016, An Official Exhibition of Month of Photography Los Angeles, Living on a Dollar A Day: The Lives and Faces of the World’s Poor, features compelling photographs by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, Renée C. Byer, who traveled to ten countries on four continents to illuminate the human faces of poverty.
Drawn from Byer’s internationally acclaimed book, Living on a Dollar a Day is a preview for a larger show that inspires viewers to put an end to extreme poverty through compassion, education and social action. These powerful images and stories help us understand the harsh conditions endured by people living on the brink of survival, and then learn how we can change those circumstances. The book won First Place Documentary Book from the International Photography Awards in 2014. Byer narrates a documentary about the project that will be released in 2016.
Renée C. Byer is an award-winning American documentary photojournalist best known for her in-depth work focusing on the disadvantaged and those who otherwise would not be heard. Her ability to produce photographs with profound emotional resonance and sensitivity earned her the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography in 2007 and dozens of national and international honors, including the World Understanding Award from Pictures of the Year International, and Pulitzer Finalist in 2013. Her photographs have appeared in publications and exhibitions around the world, notably at Visa Pour L’Image Festival of the Photograph 2014, in Perpignan, France.
Known for her ability to translate stark statistics into images that connect us to our humanity, Byer has deepened our understanding of the leading issues of our time—environmental degradation, climate change, extreme poverty, genetically modified food, healthcare, women at war, domestic violence, and the drought and economic crisis in California.

The Lucie Foundation is a proud partner of Photo Independent, which is seeking independent photographers and Photobook makers to exhibit their work April 29 to May 1, 2016.
Are you interested in building your career by getting in front of the right audience? In the past, galleries played an important role in representing and nurturing artists. However, that system can no longer support the amount of good artists who seek representation today, or who are working in unconventional media and forms. Through Photo Independent, artists can directly present and discuss their work with curators, gallery directors, dealers, collectors, editors, publishers, writers, educators, and cultural organizations, those who seek to find, invest in, promote and support the finest established, emerging and undiscovered artistic talent available today.
Photo Independent provides artists a venue to showcase their work in a professional art fair environment, the same way galleries do in art fairs such as Paris Photo and AIPAD. Through Photo Independent, artists can directly present and discuss their work with curators, gallery directors, dealers, collectors, editors and publishers — who seek to meet, buy and collect art directly from the very best established, emerging and undiscovered artists today.
Since launching in 2014, Photo Independent has become THE art fair for photographers. As previous exhibitor Jessie Chaney says, “The opportunity to exhibit at Photo Independent was a fantastic experience, for both my professional and personal photography career. Having my own booth was a great way to curate my own body of work, and also have the space to show it all together. The intimacy of the fair allowed me to interact with curators, professionals, artists and viewers in a personal setting that created lasting contacts and connections. Photo Independent is now accepting submissions from photographers worldwide. To guarantee the highest criteria of excellence, participants are selected by a diverse jury of knowledgeable arts professionals who will review all submissions. Distant Memories, photographs by Richard S. Chow - a featured mopla exhibition
The Gallery Presents, 12609 Hawthorne Blvd, Hawthorne, CA
The solo exhibit focuses on a collection of two portfolios: Distant Memories and Color Redux | Urban Landscape. Although the work in this exhibit presents two dramatically different styles and subject matters, the artist’s fundamental application of composition and interpretation create a sense of congruence. Both series transform and present imagery in a fresh perspective compelling the viewer to give the image a second look.
Richard’s latest series Distant Memories, which received recognition in the International Photography Award (IPA) - is diametrically grey, moody and reflective, a visual commentary on the ethereal nature of memories and the relationships that serve as their foundation; while his award-winning Color Redux|Urban Landscape series offers abstract modernism in striking geometries discovered within urban landscape.
Richard is a fine arts and documentary photographer. His work is honored with awards, solo/juried shows, internationally shown and published, and featured in several private collections. He is represented by Gallery 825/Los Angeles Art Association; also a producer for OPEN SHOW LA and curator at Los Angeles Curators. Richard served as Chairman of the Board for the nonprofit Create Now, whose mission is to transform lives for at-risk youth through arts mentoring.
