Digital Darkroom

Digital Darkroom features the work of 17 artists from around the world that explore the intersection of art and technology. The exhibit features the work of: Josef Astor, Pierre Beteille, Joel Grimes, Ted Grudowski, Claudia Kunin, Chris Levine, Bonny Pierce Lhotka, Khuong Nguyen, Mike Pucher, Jean-François Rauzier, Martine Roch, Christopher Schneberger, Brooke Shaden, Stanley Smith, Maggie Taylor, Jerry Uelsmann and Jean-Marie Vives.  

Each artist is a master of different types of digital techniques: compositing highly layered imagery, working in 3D and lenticular imaging, meticulously stitching together images, using lighting in highly inventive ways, and so on.  

The show will present an interesting juxtaposition of young artists immersed in digital work against Uelsmann, a master of darkroom compositing techniques. The artists come from a range of backgrounds, each specializing in fine art, commercial art, portraiture, still life, fashion, architectural, or other types of photographic and illustrative expression. However, many of the artists cross genres and combine multiple techniques to create their unique work.

Digital Darkroom is comprised of an 80-image print show with 2-6 images contributed by each of the featured photographers. Hundreds of additional images from Digital Darkroom's photographers will also be showcased in vivid detail on the two 14' by 7' high-resolution screens in the Photography Space's Digital Gallery.

Serving as curatorial advisor is Russell Brown, a Senior Creative Director at Adobe Systems Incorporated and an Emmy Award-winning instructor.  Brown was instrumental in the introduction of Adobe Photoshop, which transformed the techniques used to manipulate images.  Renowned for his entertaining style as a Photoshop teacher, he has helped the world's leading photographers, publishers, art directors and artists to master techniques that enable their digital creations.  

The exhibition includes a 3D film shot in 5K resolution using RED EPIC cameras, presented in a specially created screening room. This film includes interviews with 3D experts and historians Ray Zone and David Kuntz, 3D artists Ted Grudowski and Christopher Schneberger, and explores how 3D artists Claudia Kunin and Mike Pucher photograph their subjects and alter them digitally to create 3D results.  Key elements of the history of stereoscopic photography are also in the film.

This exhibition features photographs—made between 1945 and 1980—from the Museum's collection that represent diverse responses to the city of Los Angeles as a subject and to photography as a medium for documentary and creative expression. It is loosely grouped around the themes of experimental photography, vernacular architecture, car culture, and fantasy and the film industry. 

Both iconic and relatively unknown works are included. One of the best known is Garry Winogrand's image of two women walking towards the Theme Building at L.A. International Airport. Though a quintessential New Yorker, Winogrand settled in Los Angeles near the end of his life.

Michael Krebs: Surplus

In “Surplus,” Krebs explores his view that a war of consumerism is taking place.  In this war, the victims are consumers who are manipulated into pursuing artificially created needs.  Citizens become dependent on their income to buy goods they do not need to remain competitive in today’s society.  Using powerful references to iconic war photographs, Krebs visualizes the modern western consumer’s struggle.  As he explains, “By not showing but only referring to iconic [war] images one becomes aware of how powerful pictures are that already ‘made history’ and have become part of our visual culture.”   

Krebs was born in Klosterneuburg, Austria, in 1985.  After graduating high school, he founded a photography class for HIV-positive children at an orphanage in Honduras.  Krebs created “Surplus” in 2010 as his diploma project for the Masterclass for Design at the Graphische, Vienna.  “Surplus” was exhibited at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, and was nominated for the International Photography Award in the category “Deeper Perspective.”  Krebs is currently continuing his photography studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.  This is Krebs’s first show in the United States.

Gil Kofman: Passages: Case Studies in Euclidean Seduction

In “Passages – Case Studies in Euclidean Seduction,” Kofman investigates a new way he has been looking at the geometry of ordinary hallways, or passages.  He states, “I discovered the hallways in this exhibit quite by chance.  I was simply trying to get from one place to the next, and these so-called passages comprised part of the material space I was forced to physically traverse and mentally discard.“  Mindful of the rigid organization imposed by conventional perspective, he examines the common objects in the hallways – chairs, clocks, doors, knobs and garbage cans-- as independent forms free from the constraints of vanishing points, horizon lines and orthogonals.  As the eye rushes down the length of the passage, these objects serve as the focal point of an exploration.

Kofman was born in Nigeria and raised in Kenya, Israel and New York.  He attended the NYU Graduate Film School after studying physics at Cornell.  He also holds an MFA in playwriting from the Yale School of Drama.  Kofman has also written, produced, directed and edited a variety of fiction, plays, documentaries and other films.  He is currently busy working on two separate film projects.  He has exhibited his work in New York and has previously sold his photographs through a gallery in Rome.  His work is in private collections in New York and Los Angeles and has appeared in the New York Times and other publications.  This is Kofman’s first show at dnj Gallery.

ADC Contemporary & Building Bridges International Art Exchange presents “The Tree” curated by Anna Dusi, a group exhibition focused on Trees. This exhibition is in partnership MOPLA.

A tree represents a vital and timeless symbol. Immersed in the mist of a dreamy and surreal land, it is rooted in the earth dense with experience. The image of a tree extracts the essence of the harmony, uneasiness, lack or abundance. It enjoys a privileged relation with the environment; it grows and expands in our mental space to become a source of artistic inspiration, a monument erected to protect our history. This exhibition offers cues and suggestions to deepen our understanding of the relationship between man and nature through a vital plot that unfolds in front of our eyes in a intimate and complex manner. These three photographers introduces us through their individual sensibility and narrative intensity, to a natural element protagonist of the exhibition, a Tree. 

Garret Suhrie: Garret Suhrie shoots almost exclusively at the night to shed light on different way to see the world. His work is included in numerous art collections and widely published with clients that include: Daimler Collection, National Geographic, Smithsonian, AEG, Wall Street Journal, PDN, Flaunt and Time Out NY. After years under the employment and mentoring by international icon David La Chapelle, Garret now spends his time as a freelance Photographer, photographing and exhibiting internationally.  Garret is calling Los Angeles home base for the time being. 

Elaine Ling: Born in Hong Kong, Elaine Ling has lived in Canada since the age of nine. Upon arrival in Canada, Elaine was exhilarated by the freedom of space and began her attraction to Stone and places of Nature. After graduating medical school she was based in specialized Northern hospitals and flew into isolated communities from the Eastern to the Western Arctic, from the Northeast coast of Newfoundland to the Northwest coast to the British Columbia. Seeking the solitude of deserts and abandoned architectures of ancient cultures, Elaine Ling has explored the shifting equilibrium between nature and the man-made across four continents.  Ling has exhibited extensively in North, South America, Europe and Asia.

Thomas Basile: As secondary public school teacher he taught art, crafts, history,and yearbook. His love for photography began with a Brownie box camera given to him by his parents. Basile used a Kodak Instamatic camera during he’s teaching years to record his students’ work. After his retirement he began to spend an increasing amount of time with photography and digital darkroom.

Luigia Martelloni:  Born in Rome and live in Los Angeles. 

She graduated with a Master degree at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Rome.  She participated in a number of solo and group exhibition in Italy and in the United States.  Recently her work was shown at the "54th Biennale di Venezia" in Italy and simultanetely at the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles. In transforming and reinterpreting every day reality Luigia Martelloni explores the relationship between humanity and nature, worked with multimedia installations, film and photographs. The use of symbols from different cultures and geographic places further layers the reading of her work. The photography is very present, capturing the immediacy of the subject and the essence of the possibility, not to change the reality, but to focus and reinterpreting. Awareness of the conclusion that nothing can surpass the authenticity and beauty of nature.

Play it as it Lays: Picturing California is a group photography show of California images that share a quiet and somber tone. Images of people seeking connection and focus, as well as landscapes that illuminate a certain psychological haze that one could argue is distinct to California. On a grander scale, this haze seems to transcend California and taps into a timely sensibility of people trying to navigate through social and political blurriness to figure out who they are in the world, dealing with what they have. The pictures evoke the inner-workings of individuals alone in their own head. Alone, yet not necessarily lonely.  Just free to awkwardly unravel and to get lost for a while in the landscape of California.
