Recent Acquisitions in Focus: Latent Narratives

This exhibition features multipart photographic works by William Leavitt, Liza Ryan, Fazal Sheikh, and Whitney Hubbs. Juxtaposing images of people, places, and things, the works present fragmentary, enigmatic narratives that nonetheless establish a powerful, almost palpable atmosphere or mood. When sequenced by the artist in a specific order, the images recall storyboards used for motion pictures. When excerpted from a larger series, they suggest a stream-of-consciousness meditation on a theme. By providing the visual cues or markers of stories still to be played out, these photographs encourage visitors to participate in completing the narratives.

Conceived to illuminate the breakthroughs of marginalized communities, IDENTITY: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders The List Portraits is comprised of 151 uniquely compelling large-format photographs of pioneers in five distinct-but-often-overlapping groups. Each installment (The Black List, The Latino List, The Women’s List, The Out List and The Trans List) calls attention to cultural progress as exemplified by the stories of its subjects, people who have overcome obstacles to achieve success in disparate walks of life. This is the first time the full series can be seen in its entirety.
The exhibition includes the world premiere of The Trans List, the latest installment in Greenfield-Sanders’ ongoing series. This new collection is a curation of 40 intimate and revealing photographs of members of the transgender community. The Trans List will also debut as an HBO Documentary Film on December 5th, 2016.
IDENTITY: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders The List Portraits offers a refreshing and deeply engaging look into race, gender, class, sexuality and ethnicity in America.

Television, as both a term and a commodity, is undergoing transformation. Recalling the ubiquitous television set as our daily image provider seems almost quaint, even a bit nostalgic in 2016. Television now registers as benign in light of the constant hover, hum, and hook-up of the internet. Today, our visual feed—of both still and moving imagery—comes from multiple screens in multiple dimensions. Featuring 10 works by renowned photographers, this installation considers the territory of TV as worthy subject, conflicting message, and potent medium.

#GIRLGAZE: A FRAME OF MIND

#girlgaze: a frame of mind is an interactive, digitally driven exhibit for all ages that maps the imaginative landscape of young, female and trans-identifying photographers from around the world. Largely sourced through social media, the curated images’ raw vitality is their only constant – female, WOC, and trans-identifying perspectives are presented on everything from identity and standards of beauty to relationships, mental health and creativity. While viewing these stunning, never-before-exhibited images, visitors will have the opportunity to create and share their own photos on social media.
The exhibit curators are Girlgaze, a collective founded by the famed British-born television host, women’s advocate and photographer Amanda de Cadenet. Girlgaze began as a social media movement with over 450,000 submissions on Instagram and has grown into the first multimedia platform to support girls behind the camera. In addition to its digital showcase for images, Girlgaze provides a larger ecosystem supporting the work and careers of fledgling female and gender-nonconforming photographers, artists and creatives, from providing grants to securing jobs.

Breaking News: Turning the Lens on Mass Media

Over the past 50 years, artists have increasingly turned to newspapers, magazines, and televised news programs as rich sources of inspiration. This exhibition explores how artists have looked at and commented on news images, from the Vietnam War in the 1960s to the so-called “War on Terror” in the 2000s. Much of the work is political; all of it is personal. Through photographs and videos, these artists have juxtaposed, mimicked, and appropriated media elements to transform ephemeral news into lasting works of art.

The earth’s landscapes are both eternal and ever-changing. Human activity in the Anthropocene has reworked the character of the topography in majestic, surreal, and troubling ways. Salt flats, strip mines, and the cracks of dry lake beds offer mysterious, often painterly surfaces that tether the universe to intimate experience. Dust on the horizon, in the air, and under our feet catches the light, refracts and radiates. These three artists use photography and photogenic means to both depict and evoke the visual and geological territory of the new terrestrial normal.

The Lodge and independent curator Audrey Landreth are pleased to present David Black: Cerro Gordo.
Timed closely to the publication of David Black's first monograph, Cerro Gordo by Hat & Beard Press, (December 2016), this exhibition of fourteen large format prints is David Black’s first exhibition at The Lodge.
Located on the edge of Death Valley, Cerro Gordo is a ghost town that was once the greatest producer of silver in California. In the early 20th century, Eastman Kodak used the silver mined at Cerro Gordo to manufacture early motion picture film stock. The film was then utilized by an emerging Hollywood to capture the most popular genre of the time: Westerns. Western films were then exported all over the world and used to define a vision of the West.
For photographer David Black, Cerro Gordo is a steep, windy street in Echo Park, where he lived during the years that the work for this exhibition was made. After the death of his father in 2014, it was on this street that Black experienced both love and heartbreak. During restless nights and aimless drives through the streets of Los Angeles, these images came to him, and he followed them to actualization over the course of two years. The selection of work on view is a powerful showcase of vivid and plaintive visions of Los Angeles, and the paradoxical duality of the West. Cerro Gordo celebrates both the light and the shadow that sculpt the city's singular sprawl: the mechanical monsters that populate the oil fields; the cool cars that heat up the streets; the atmospheric haze that permeates all like a melancholic daydream; its unrelenting highways; its autopsied landscape; its diverse voices holding out for hope, and its steady stream of cowboys longing for the drea

Vijat Mohindra: "Always Believe That Something Wonderful Is About To Happen"
Many of Vijat Mohindra's subjects, such as Amanda Lepore and drag performer Amazon Ashley, perform transgressive versions of femininity that do not conform to gender norms. In these highly constructed stage sets, saturated with primary colors, their fluid spectrum of sexuality and gender acts as a kind of prism, refracting the infinite number of colors within those individual monochromes.

Parinya Champ is a Los Angeles based artist attempting to map a higher dimensional state of consciousness known as Hyperspace—a realm existing outside of time that is imbued with decadent fractal landscapes of intelligent kaleidoscopic light. His photo series, Landscapes of the Hyperspace, is an attempt at visually charting the hauntingly vibrant abstract spaces he has encountered on his journeys to the farthest reaches of human consciousness.

After studying painting and graphic design at Cooper Union and Yale, Maisel began his career in photography in 1954. While his portfolio includes the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Miles Davis, he is perhaps best known for capturing the light, gesture, and color found in everyday life. This unique vision kept him busy for more than 40 years shooting annual reports, magazine covers, jazz albums, advertising and more for an array of clients worldwide.
Some of his commercial accomplishments include five Sports Illustrated swimsuit covers, the first two covers of New York Magazine, the cover of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue (the best-selling jazz album of all time), twelve years of advertising with United Technologies, and a litany of awards from such organizations as International Center of Photography, American Society of Media Photographers, ADC, Professional Photographers of America, and Cooper Union.
Since he stopped taking on commercial work in the late ’90s, Jay has continued to focus
on his personal work. He has developed a reputation as a giving and inspiring teacher as
a result of extensive lecturing and photography workshops throughout the country. He also continues to sell prints, which can be found in private, corporate, and museum collections.

Instagram Jam features the photography of well-known and obscure photographers using Instagram to share their work. Month of Photo LA, a signature program of the Lucie Foundation, presents the 9th annual festival and is delighted to announce installment number five of Instagram Jam, a curated print and projected exhibition featuring unique and interesting Instagrammers.

YOUTH - AN OFFICIAL MOPLA EXHIBITION

YOUTH is a collaborative project of eight Los Angeles-based photographers that do collective works under the name Image Hoarders. For YOUTH, these group works seek to cover a wide range of childhood, and growing up through diverse subject matter. Each photographer has a primary story, but curated together strive to tell a fuller narrative. One story, for example, is following a nine-year-old football player as he fiercely trains under the instruction of his father, who regularly coaches grown men that compete in the NFL. Another gets into the backyard party punk scene as the musicians and friends get their first big dose of cultural expression sans adult supervision. One photographer shows the intimate moments as children experience and need to deal with great loss for the first time, such as the passing of a family member. While the stories seem varied on the surface, the Image Hoarders group has proven their ability to bring individual visions and voices together to show something unified, and broader than they could have shown alone.
Photographers include Joan Allen, Coral von Zumwalt, Aaron Fallon, Yuri Hasegawa, Dominic DiSaia, Megan Miller, Matt Harbicht, and Matt Hoover.

“I paint myself because I am the subject I know best.” —Frida Kahlo
Self-Portraits is a photography exhibit featuring 150 teenage girls who created captivating self-portraits and personal narratives. Las Fotos Project student photographers, girls and young ladies ages 11 to 18, photographed themselves using different photography techniques while learning about self-confidence and self-expression. This is a free community celebration and reception of our Self-Portraits student exhibition. se visit www.lasfotosproject.org.
This event will be an opportunity for guests to preview our new youth gallery and community darkroom. The space, an 1,100 square foot work studio and gallery, will become the new home of Las Fotos Project, a photography mentoring organization for teenage girls.

Water and Sky, is an expansive blue wall installation from artists in a variety of fields depicting water and sky. The exhibit will be displayed for a week alone then joined by ceiling hanging sculptures to create the impression of creatures swimming through a sea of art.
