Magda Biernat shares work from her most recent projects, including photographs taken during her year-long travels from Antarctica to Alaska, and speaks about her personal exploration into the built environment and its impact on the natural world.
A native of Poland currently based in New York City, Magda Biernat is a freelance photographer specializing in architecture and interiors. Her photographs, produced on assignments around the world, have been published in, among others, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Interior Design, Wallpaper, Metropolis, Dwell and Afar. Biernat's personal work deals with themes of home, habitation and belonging, and has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. She has been the recipient of several awards, such as the TMC/Kodak Grant, Lucie Award and Magenta Foundation Flash Forward.

Lanakila MacNaughton lives in Portland but photographs up and down the west coast. Her work is rooted in a need to explore not only back roads but gender stereotypes, which creates imagery that stimulates the need for classic icons.

Mark Leibowitz travels the world to capture these behind the scene images of the world top fashion shows. Using the lighting, mood and costumes of the show he collaborates by creating images that invoke and record the emotion of the show for all of time with a photographic print.

HADLEY AND PETER ARNOLD: Divining Los Angeles: Adaptation By Design

Using landscape photography from across the west and experimental geospatial tools for metropolitan Los Angeles, Hadley and Peter Arnold explore promising possibilities for how humans can adapt to climate extremes in the 21st century.
Hadley and Peter Arnold are founding co-directors of the Arid Lands Institute (ALI), a research, outreach and education center at Woodbury University devoted to design of the built environment in dry lands. ALI's mission is to advance design innovation at the nexus of water, energy and climate preparation. ALI brings together design, science, policy and the arts to envision a robust and vibrant future in the US West, serving as a model for drylands globally.

Come watch as the city's finest photographers, photo editors and creative directors take the stage and showcase their sources of inspiration in fun, fast paced presentations of 20 slides, shown for 20 seconds each. It's powerpoint meets poetry slam.

Kip Evans speaks about the changes he has seen in our oceans during his 30+ years of documentary-photography exploration, including a recent 17-day underwater assignment as an aquanaut with Mission 31.
For more than two decades Kip Evans has been exploring the oceans and guiding conservation efforts through his documentary photography projects. He has led and participated in expeditions throughout the world, including recent explorations in Alaska, Cuba, Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama.

Venice Arts and Month of Photography Los Angeles present “From Darkroom to Daylight”, a film by Harvey Wang that explores how the dramatic change from film to digital has affected photographers and their work. Wang interviewed more than 20 important photographers and prominent figures in the field including Sally Mann, Eugene Richards, George Tice, as well as innovators Steven Sasson (who built the first digital camera while at Kodak) and Thomas Knoll (who, along with his brother, created Photoshop).
Screening will be preceded by a reception from 7:00 to 7:30 and followed by a Q&A with Director Harvey Wang.

BALAZS GARDI: Stories From the Water Front

Balazs Gardi shares the stories he has encountered in the past decade while tracking how profoundly water has affected people's lives.
Independent photographer Balazs Gardi works to capture stories about marginalized communities in desperate situations. He spends time with people struck by the harshest conditions as events unfold in overpopulated slums, refugee camps, natural disasters, war zones and other crisis areas, which are often under-represented in the mainstream media.
Gardi spent two years following how the Roma (gypsy) minorities are trying to deal with their growing poverty, declining social status and appalling living conditions in a dozen Eastern European countries. He has traveled regularly to Afghanistan and Pakistan to document life in a region in a state of insecurity and a downward spiral that is dragging these countries back to open warfare.
In recent years, his attention has turned to reporting the local harbingers of the global water crisis. This has evolved into "Facing Water Crisis," his most ambitious photography project to date. It features an expanding series of individual stories about the most life-threatening environmental crisis mankind has ever faced, covering heavily affected regions around the world. Gardi's worldwide independent expedition exploring the far-reaching consequences of the global water crisis has recently evolved into Azdarya, an online magazine solely dedicated to water.
