VINCENT J. MUSI, TAMING THE WILD - IN ASSOCIATION WITH MOPLA

 Vincent J. Musi has been a regular contributor to National Geographic since 1993, covering subjects from the Texas Hill Country to hurricanes, volcanoes and mummies. A specialist in animal portraits, his recent work includes projects on domestication, intelligence and cognition. Musi’s work has taken him from historic Route 66 to the oldest temple on Earth in Turkey. He is also a contributor to TIME, Newsweek, Life, Fortune and The New York Times Magazine.

Musi always likes to talk to animals right before he shoots them. He will speak about how he learned to be an animal photographer and like it, despite the fact that animals growl, bark, roar, bite, hiss, claw, poop and pee on you.

GERD LUDWIG, WINDS OF CHANGE - IN ASSOCIATION WITH MOPLA

 Gerd Ludwig will share his experiences capturing the colossal changes since the dissolution of the Soviet Union to today. Resonating with a full scale of emotion, his images have garnered him distinction as the world’s foremost color photographer documenting the region. From the broken empire’s legacy of environmental exploitation, to the warp-speed economic transformation of Russia, Ludwig reveals a many-faceted people, by turns suspicious and sympathetic, greedy and generous, stoic and exuberant.

The presentation will span his coverage from early work published in National Geographic to more recent stories in Kazakhstan and the Ukraine. After first photographing the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster for National Geographic in 1993, he returned several times. Recently he ventured deeper into the failed reactor than ever before and returned with haunting images, which will be part of his presentation and an upcoming monograph, The Long Shadow of Chernobyl.

 A climber and visual storyteller, Cory Richards was named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2012. Through his work in some of the planet's most remote places, he has carved a niche as a leading editorial and expedition photographer. His camera has taken him from the controlled and complex studio to the wild and remote corners of Asia, Africa, Pakistan and the South Pacific—all in the attempt to capture not only the soul of adventure and exploration, but the beauty inherent in our modern society.

Richards’ photography has appeared in National Geographic magazine, Outside and The New York Times; and his film work has won awards at nearly every major adventure film festival including the grand prize at the Banff Mountain Film Festival.

In his lecture, Richards will explore the transformative power of imagery through his own journeys to the borderlands of society and human potential.

Understanding Fine Art Photography - In Association with MOPLA

 The definition and understanding of what makes a photographic image “art” is undoubtedly subjective and sometimes a bit confusing. 

On Thursday April 17th, APA Los Angeles presents a panel discussion to help demystify and explain the intention of creating fine art imagery.  We will hear the perspectives from  gallery owner Rose Shoshana, educator Sune Woods (Cal Arts) as well as artist Brett Van Ort and Curator of Photography, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Karen Sinsheimer.

Panel moderator Aline Smithson is a renowned photographer and teacher who is represented by galleries around the world. Aline founded the fine art photography blog LENSCRATCH.

We will explore the blurred lines between fine art and editorial imagery-- work that is shot with intention and concepts. We will explore the kind of work that finds its way onto gallery walls and into museum collections.

We are thrilled to be having this event at the prestigious ROSEGALLERYin Bergamot Station Arts Center, Santa Monica.

PIECES OF STRING - AN OFFICIAL MOPLA EXHIBITION & DISCUSSION

For four years Justin Kimball photographed in abandoned homes, hotels and buildings in the Northeastern United States.  Justin sought within the abandoned spaces the evidence of an individual's life. Photographing “the smallest objects (a note, a box of hair pins, a stain on a pillow)." Imball re-imagines their existence and relationship to the absent owners. 

 In an artist lecture on April 19th, Justin will discuss his 60 color photographs from this body of work as explorations of the minutiae of everyday life—a contemplation of our brief and humble legacies before they are cleaned up and cast to the wind.

Patricia Lanza, On Location - In Association with MOPLA

Patricia Lanza began her career at the National Geographic Society— first as a photo researcher, then as a photography editor, followed by eight years as a contract photographer, when she had over 700 pictures published.  Assignments have taken her to 48 countries for a variety of national and international clients and publications, including a contract with the Herald Tribune Syndicate for both writing and photography.

She began working for the Annenberg Foundation in 2005, researching an idea and writing an initiative on the uses of photography and digital media for Wallis Annenberg, the Foundation’s Chairman, President and CEO.

In 2009, the Annenberg Space for Photography opened.  As the Director of Talent & Content, Lanza is responsible for creating and carrying out Wallis Annenberg’s vision through themed programming and photographic exhibitions.

The Annenberg Space for Photography has won the Julius Shulman Communications award and the Lucie Award for Exhibition of the year for Beauty CULTure.
